A dragon in the Midst
First Session

Three former members of a long since disbanded squad were able to meet after nearly 6 years of being apart. Each one was contacted by messengers and each made their way to the city of Ceet, the northernmost cavern in the underground network. Unfortunately, two of their members were not able to join them.

Soon enough, they met Tramyuul, the Brigadier Dragoon of the Order of the Flame for Ceet. He told them that he had meet their other members not more than a week ago. Those two men had told Tramyuul of nothing less than a small Blue Dragon living inside the cavern of Ceet. Tramyuul reminded everyone that no such creature should be able to get into the cavern. Each cavern is sealed to prohibit teleportation from the surface except from the use of a Portal in each city (each of which is carefully guarded). The group decided to help Tramyuul and investigate this cavern, in hopes of finding their lost comrades.

Tramyuul warned them that their efforts would go unpaid by him, however he offered them aid when he could give it. The first aid he offered came in the form of two companions, a samurai and a construct.

As the group grew to five they tackled the cavern where the Dragon was said to reside. After fighting their way through vermin, traps and mazes they finally encountered the Dragon. The fight was long and difficult and at times grim but ultimately the group prevailed.

They were able to raid this small dragon’s already sizeable horde, however, they found no trace of their comrades…other than the best of their items among the Dragon’s possesions.

Weary and battle drained, they returned to Ceet.

Trouble in Torwald
Unusual events with much suspicious

After resting from their last battle with a Blue Dragon, the party returned to Tramyuul to see where their talents could be used next. He recommended they travel to Torwald to investigate the events going on there. People had been going missing, odd murders, crime shooting through the roof and strange affects to magic in Torwald and Ceet.

After buying a horse and carriage the group began the two day journey to Torwald. After a full day of travel they made camp off the side of the road, only to be attacked in the middle of the night. While the bandits were able to catch the group by surprise, dealing significant damage, the group stifled the attack quickly. The impressive equipment and wealth of the bandits was worrying to the group, but the rest of the night went by without incident.

Once the group arrived in Torwald they made their way to an extravagant inn named the Golden Eagle. After resting Medeil and Machera were able to speak with the Brigadier Dragoon of Torwald, Katrick Lowe. While they waited for him Machera was able to read a part of a strange document, written in many languages, which seemed to refer to an ancient powerful artifact, which may have something to do with Vanus. Lowe explained that things began to get strange within the last few months, beginning with the disappearance of 4 priestesses and the murder of one. The priestess who was murdered drowned while in the Temple, an occurence which seems impossible. Since then there have been many strange disappearances and murders. The amount of crime has increased hugely, causing significant turmoil among the various gangs. He suggested that the group attempt to infiltrate or question one of the smaller or newer gangs. The large, established gangs such as the Red Dragon’s Blood or The Shield, would likely be too powerful to be infiltrated easily. Finally, the lights in the caverns have began to act strangely, as well as other magic becoming unpredictable. After speaking with one of the powerful mages at the Order, Machera was able to learn that some powerful magical disturbance has been creating a huge impact on the magical field in the area. While he did not have a precise location of the disturbance, they had been able to track it down to originating from somewhere in the tunnel between Ceet and Torwald.

Caelsar and Raam were able to sell the items the group took from the bandits who attacked them and then did some investigating about the disappearances in the town. Most people seemed to know little about them and were certainly not eager to discuss it. They did learn that the last man to go missing was a Merchant named Trool, who owns a store named Majora in the Market District.

Medeil spoke with the High Priest at the Temple of Vanus, Loma. The man relayed that a group of bandits had been threatening the temple in the weeks before and since the disappearance of the priestesses. He believed the priestesses were kidnapped and taken to the lair of these bandits, located just outside Torwald. Medeil perceived that the Priest was very nervous and lying about some of the things he was saying. The man seemed overly relieved to see Medeil go.

The group returned to the Inn to decide their next move.

A Menace Arises
The truth surfaces and with it a dire threat

Tuesday, 12th of Keadas, 466 AV
Our heroes began by moving against a known target, a group of bandits holed up outside of Torwald. As they did they ran into a new face, a cleric from Ceet who was sent by Tramyuul. Yna departed ways and the group continued towards their target. After a long search they were finally able to discover the cave they were looking for, and the hunt began.

The stealthy rogue began by scouting the area and after relaying that important information to the group he began sniping at the people in the cave. The battle was quite one sided as the group easily tore its way through the small group of bandits. However, the aftermath revealed a critical oversight, they had killed their only way of learning of the whereabouts of the kidnapped priestesses.

The group returned to Torwald, much richer for their trouble, and made their peace with the High Priest. It was not until that night that the same High Priest, Loma, revealed that he had sent them on a fool’s errand in an effort to keep his priestesses safe. He revealed the priestesses were hidden in the catacombs below the temple. Further investigation revealed that months ago, the priestesses had resurrected a powerful psion named Manius. One of the priestesses confessed that she had found more information about him. She had discovered that he had become drunk by his own power and obsessed with the idea of returning to the surface. The group learned that Manius was put down by the church, sealed away in a hidden chamber in the catacombs and never spoken of again. Just before his death, Manius had started a shrine to the god Asmodius, the evil Lord of Lords.

After further searching they were able to find the location of the shrine, a rough distance to the disturbance in the magical field, and a new boon from Tramyuul. He had arranged for a Skiff to be built for the group. With that, they rested and began their preparations.

The gears start turning and the world grinds to a halt

Tuesday, 19th of Keadas, 466 AV

After a few days of rest as the group waited for their skiff to be completed and the Royal Mages to complete their tasks, the heroes became quickly bored. Using the dueling stone and a bottle of Dragons Fire, they made a contest of seeing who could drink the most of the foul liquid before passing out. While some were able to drink more than others, it quickly became apparent that this game had no real winners…bragging rights still went to Tyros the Dwarf.

On the morning of the 17th all of the contracted projects had been completed and the group set out to tackle their next problem. They began by traveling to the Royal Mages, who presented them with a small gold sphere inscribed with an eye and a point. The mage explained that while the compass could show them towards the source of the magical disturbance, its reliability was questionable at best. However, with it as their best lead, they happily accepted it and moved on.

They next went to Tiin to pick up the skiff she was building for them. Upon arriving at her workshop they discovered something astonishing. Instead of the 60 foot skiff they had paid for a 90 foot behemoth capable of incredibly long journeys and high speeds awaited them.

A half days journey in Embara reveals the compasses weakness, however, using that to their advantage the group is able to make a rough estimate of the location of the disturbance. With a bit of luck, they find an out of place and suspicious cave in the tunnel wall. The cave leads to a large open room and investigation reveals something gruesome and disturbing. Eight men, nude, twisted into grotesque and unnatural positions. In the center, an altar with a spear at its center. The power of the artifact quickly becomes apparent. It becomes insulted at their presence and before the group has time to flee, the world around them changes.

A desperate struggle begins. Each time the group defeats an opponent another appears, culminating in a battle with an Ettin and an Ogre. However, when the dust settles, they are returned to the room they were in, the strange power of the spear subdued, and they are able to take the spear back to their ship.

However, a study of the item reveals that it seems to be one of the Legacies. A spear named Metasis which once belonged to the Paragon Taravel. Furthermore, taking the Legacy back to the ship reveals another problem, the magic of the ship reacts to the power of the spear. Although the journey back to Torwald begins without incident, soon they are in the throes of a magical storm, pushing ship and crew to their limits.

Returning to Torwald reveals a further problem. Although they arrive in the city at mid morning, the lights have yet to come on. Medeil, Tyros and Mach all race to the Order to tell Dragoon Lowe of what has happened. His shock is palpable. After racing across the city, Lowe retrieves every single Royal Mage from the Lords Mansion. A procession of 14 Mages, led by an ancient Elf named Graaz emerges. After another hurried journey back to the Embara,Lord Mage Graaz asks to see the artifact. After a few moments, Graaz reveals that he is sure that the spear which they have retrieved is in fact Metasis, however, something terrible and incredible has been done to it. He tells them that a war rages inside of it and while that terrible power has been subdued for a moment it is gaining strength as they speak. He promises to keep the group informed but urges them not to leave Torwald, refrain from using magic, and keep the artifact an absolute secret. In return for their help with this, he offers them a token from the Royal Mages coffers, 18 pounds of pure platinum.

Left literally in the dark, Lowe and the Mages retreat from the group. Although successful, they are left powerless to wonder what will happen next.

Time passes...
The members of Embara Channon are forced into a life of hiding.

The forces of evil were far more advanced than anyone anticipated. Someone or something was so prepared to stop Tramyuul, Medeil, Raam and Tyros that they never saw the betrayal coming. Evil had infiltrated high enough that somehow the order came down to arrest or kill the weary group at all costs. They were successful.
After recovering Metasis and returning it to the Royal Mages, destroying a shrine to Asmodius and cleansing Metasis of at least some of the evil which it contained the heroes traveled to the capital city of Elpidia. Upon arrival they were immediately arrested. It quickly became clear that fairness and justice were out of the question for the group and it seemed that the hangman’s noose was the only legal exit to their situation. Escape became the only option.
The escape did not go without problem but it was successful, however upon arrival at the Embara Channon the group encountered a band of Royal Mages and Order soldiers. The group had no choice but to defeat them and flee.
The depth and breadth of the problem was much graver than the group understood at the time. They found themselves unwelcome anywhere in the underground. Security began to escalate. Fear and rumor fueled the state to clench down on the underground like a fist. Escaping to the surface became impossible, even by Portal Mages sympathetic to the group. Even friends to the group shunned them for fear of reprisal. The group found themselves wandering from tunnel to tunnel, taking great care to hide the easily recognizable Embara Channon.
During this time the group began to deal with internal strife. While their tenacity and perseverance have inspired the crew of the Embara to pledge an unfailing allegiance to the group; other members have been unable to cope with the situation. Caelsar Kenyrdlues was the first to leave, quietly and in the night without a word to anyone. Machera was the next to go, an action which, given his obvious growing disdain for the group and their situation, was not unexpected by anyone. The gnomish mage, to everyone’s surprise, simply packed up and walked off of the ship in the middle of the day, announcing that she was leaving as though she were walking to the store to get provisions.
Traamyuul has been traveling with the group for a number of weeks now. Blending in as a 7 foot tall Kolyaruut Inevitable bound to rather distinct black armor with gold trim is more or less out of the question. While Traamyuul does have the luxury of being able to simply stand in one place without eating breathing or moving at all for the rest of eternity, sitting on one’s laurels is not natural for the ancient creature and he has found this to be the most helpful place he can be.
The crew of Embara Channon was nothing less than shocked when the first of the Anointed found them. However, the value of these individuals was wildly evident. Even though they were young, inexperienced and lacking in power, their potential was clear. The crew began to believe that these people would be the future of Seara, for better or for worse.

The Return

For more than a year the group has been on the run. Unable to help the world around them as the situation grew more dire by the day.

Until they found the Annointed.

With the help of 3 new members, Xarchos, Hunter and Serik, the crew of the Embara Channon was able to begin doing work for the underground for the first time in 15 months. Challenged by Medeil to choose a mission of their own, the three decided it would be best to aid the cities of Maso and Morinus.

Upon arriving in Maso, they were not greeted with anything even resembling hospitality. They learned that the city is indeed in dire straits and that most visitors to the city are usually there for less than altruistic reasons. Reluctantly, the town’s Brigadier Dragoon was able to secure for them a few horses with which to secure the passage from Maso to Morinus. He told them of a place, near Morinus, which had been the site of two prior caravan attacks.

After trekking for nearly two weeks the group was able to locate a tunnel leading off the primary shaft in roughly the place where Dragoon Tameeno had described. They found inside a number of creatures, unnatural to be sure and certainly malevolent. At the head of this group was something for which the group was entirely unprepared. A Wraith in full strength.

The Wraith quickly took its fury out upon the group, crippling the summoner Searik within seconds. After a few moments more it became clear that the wraith simply outclassed the group. They had almost no means of harming the wraith, while the wraith certainly had the means of ending all their lives without much difficulty. With some clever thinking, Searik and Xarchos were able to seal off the wraith’s path with the use of some luck, skill and sheer power. The strategy was enough to allow them to escape the wraith’s grasp, for now.

The group rode with all haste toward Morinus where they hope to warn the city of what threatens them…and perhaps to find the means with which to aid them.

Cleaning Morinus
Morinus is in a particular bind, one which only the pair can address

Upon arrival into Morinus the group immediately begin to look for someone…anyone…who could help. However they did not get more than a couple blocks into the town before Xarchos stopped the group.

Xarchos began to explain to the other two adventurers that what he had seen, enough to break most men, had shaken him to the core and he could continue no further.

The two other members wearily continued to the Order office where they spoke with the Brig. Dragoon. He told them of a peculiar situation where the local Red Dragon’s Blood gang had become powerful enough to openly establish a headquarters in a house in the town. The gang had, however, taken the initiative to ensure that their legal security was ensured. Given the desperate nature of the town’s security, the Brig. Dragoon was willing to take drastic steps to eliminate the threat. He presented the two men with a fire bomb ensured to rid the town of the house permanently…

Despite being well guarded and housed by many members of the Red Dragon’s Blood the pair managed to ransack the house, retrieve many items stolen from the Order including a magically endowed ax. After defeating the house master, a particularly brutish man using an enormous sword, they planted the firebomb and quickly made off with the rest of the goods they could find.

Without fail, the firebomb exploded with tremendous force. Almost completely eliminating the first floor of the house and causing the remainder of the house to fall in upon itself in a ball of flame. Of course, help arrived to put out the fire fairly quickly although their primary focus seemed to be ensuring that the fire did not spread…

In return for bringing back a very valuable supply of Order arms and Armor the Brig. Dragoon allowed the pair to keep the axe as well as endowing Searik’s teeth with runes giving them extraordinary strength and sharpness.

With their new abilities the pair is poised to be able to take the fight back to the wraith which defeated them before.

Further Hope
A new hero joins and reinvigorates the group

Hunter and Searik had been in Morinus for less than a day after completing their work for The Order and receiving their payment when they are approached by a well dressed gray-skin half-ork. He is well spoken and charismatic, shaven with his canines carefully filed to a more normal size and surprisingly good looking for an ork. The man introduces himself as a Lieutenant in the Order. A young man who never worked under Tramyuul but has a tremendous respect for the man none the less, the young lieutenant immediately knew that the charges levied against him were patently false. By association any charges against the rest of the group were likely false as well and any friends of Tramyuul would be allies of his. With this new hope, the group prepares to take the fight back to the wraith.

Return to the Wraith
The time has come to prove that a wraith cannot stand in the path of the good.

After meeting in Morinus and ensuring that they were well prepared to take the fight back to the wraith which had defeated them before, the group set out. After travelling for two days the group camped one extra night to ensure they entered the cave during daylight. This would ensure that the wraith would be inside the cave and not wandering about the primary cavern, nor could it escape.

The group found the cave and approached around noon. They closed in on the cave but heard sounds within. After some tense moments the group discovered that a trio of gang members were posted inside. The group convinced the three men to come out willingly and convinced them, while thoroughly terrifying the men, to divulge any information they had. They revealed that a trap had been set inside the cavern and with their help, Searik was able to disable the trap without too much trouble. They left two of the men unconscious, suspended from ropes in two trees outside the cavern. The third man they left lying unconscious within.

As they proceeded further in the group began seeing evidence of spiders, however, the giant spiders used their ability to feel vibrations in their webs to get the better of Searik. Although the spiders were aided by a giant scorpion and began with the upper hand, they were soundly defeated by the 4 heroes.

The heroes find themselves that much closer to the wraith. Little stands between them and the dark soul which defeated them before.

The foot of the mountain
A menace falls but a new menace is revealed

The 4 heroes took on the wraith which had defeated them before and while the malevolent spirit was no less potent, the four were able to soundly defeat it with all haste. However, upon defeating the spirit the heroes were confronted with something unexpected. A small black crystal remained where the wraith stood moments before.

The heroes then took the crystal to Morinus Mage’s Library to discover what they could about the crystal. They found that powerful magic could create physical manifestations of arcane power and that what is often called “Old Magic” can produce these results. Scrying with a focus on the crystal revealed faint voices within, particularly that of a woman who said, “…pledge…blade…you, we…anything. Yes, my light.” The four were later able to discover that “My Light” was a common method of referring to Vanus. They were then able to discover that when these crystals are created, more facets indicate more powerful magic and that anything above 8 facets indicates quite powerful magic…this crystal had 40. They found that flaws, like those found in this particular crystal, indicate a corruption or weakening of that magic, such as a weak mage using an epic staff or wand. Finally, the four were able to find that the Legacies almost always left crystals when used, often with more than 20 faces and occasionally left huge stones with 100 or more facets. In particular, the blade Exaction owned by the ancient Patron of Morinus, Leania, was said to leave pale black stones growing on the wounds wherever one was cut. These crystals would consume the body of those cut by Exaction resulting in a guaranteed death if one was cut by Leania’s blade.

Upon making this discovery the group returned to the Embara Channon, secure in their finding that the crystal which they uncovered was somehow created from the power of Exaction. Mediel took this information to Tramyuul who, much to the group’s surprise, had been aboard the ship for some time. Tramyuul suggested taking the crystal, as well as the Spear Metasis, to Kalyik, an old compatriot of Tramyuul. The general method of surviving the effects of the surface, using armor and clothing made from Frosteyre, was precluded to the four as the substance is overwhelmingly expensive. Tramyuul suggests speaking with Lord Mage Graaz in Torwald to see if he knows of any other ways to allow the four to survive the surface long enough to reach Kalyik.

Graaz suggests that a particular stone, called a Tear of Arcana or Tear of Vanus, could be used to turn the enemy’s strategy against them. They could use these Tears to use some of the power of the helm Protector. After seeking information nearby the group was able to find that a local gang, The Blue Vipers, had been collecting these stones and likely had a few on hand. After raiding their local gang house and defeating a fearsome dwarf known only as Sundering Axe, the group as able to recover 5 Tears of Arcana. Lord Mage Graaz was able to use the stones and the Fearo’s helm to produce a number of peculiar necklaces. When donned, the necklace wove a fine black cloak that formed a protective barrier around the hero. The four were finally ready to go to the surface.
